Consciousness and Education: Why Consciousness Matters for the Future of Education

June 16 @ 9:30 am (BST) - June 17 @ 4:30 pm (BST)

This two-day conference includes both in-person and online participation. It will explore how emerging post-materialist perspectives are reshaping our understanding of mind, reality, and what it means to be human. Challenging the assumption that consciousness is generated solely by the brain, the conference examines growing evidence that consciousness may be a fundamental aspect of reality—and considers the profound implications of this shift for education. Drawing on insights from science, philosophy, and the humanities, participants are invited to rethink core assumptions about knowledge, learning, agency, and meaning in educational theory and practice. The programme includes talks and workshops led by Alef Trust faculty members Joan Walton, Jessica Bockler, and Laurel Waterman.

Dr Federico Faggin will be playing a central role throughout the two days — presenting, engaging in dialogue, and participating in discussion sessions. For many, Federico needs no introduction. As the originator of the microprocessor and pioneer behind the touchpad and touchscreen, his work fundamentally shaped the digital world. In recent years, however, his focus has shifted toward an even deeper question: the nature of consciousness itself.  At this event, we will be exploring the implications of his ideas for education.  The conference marks a rare opportunity to spend extended time with Federico in a setting designed for serious inquiry. Rather than a single keynote appearance, he will be present across both days — sharing ideas, responding to questions, and entering into dialogue with other scholars, including the eminent Professor of Higher Education, Ron Barnett.

The programme can be found here, and full details with booking information are available here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/consciousness-and-education-conference-2026-tickets-1980367896689?aff=oddtdtcreator

Final date for registration for in-person participation is 31st May 2026.
